Good old addition. Probably the first thing we learn in math. Back when we all enjoyed it.
I often wonder why we all start off liking math. I think it’s because addition is simple and easy to understand and we never forget how to do it… EVER. Unlike most things in math.
I figure that a lot of people don’t like math because they don’t understand it or because they find it hard (just like with most things in life) but we all start off liking math because it’s simple and easy to understand when we are learning addition and such.
This is why I would thoroughly advice encouraging children when they are learning addition. Make sure they enjoy math while they can by allowing them to practice it a lot. They will probably want to (that’s right I did say want to).
It might be the only part of math that they get a sense of satisfaction from. Because they don’t need help to do it and they don’t forget how to do it.
It’s funny the sense of satisfaction I still get when I do an addition sum. I sometimes do addition facts on addition worksheets and I know I’m not the only one who thinks 'yay' when I get it right. Well I hope I’m not the only one anyway.
Maybe it's because once we have learnt how to do addition facts, we don't forget. So whether we are 15 or 50 we still enjoy doing addition because we can do it easily.
Why don't we find out? Here’s a quick survey (you can even check out the how many people have answered with what answer, once you have answered of course – so it is worth moving that mouse all the way to the check box and clicking)
It is important for parents to give their children as many opportunities as they can to practice their addition. Because children feel good when they do addition, it is important to take advantage of this to put them in the right mindset about all of math and not just addition.
So what are you waiting for... give the kids one of our free addition worksheets. Or maybe it's for you... either way we won't tell - promise!
